Salat

This is the Second Pillar of Islam. The Second Pillar of Islam is to perform the ritual prayers properly. One must pray five times per day, minimum: dawn (Salat al-fajr), noon (Salat al-zuhr), mid-afternoon (Salat al-‘asr), sunset (Salat al-maghrib), and nightfall (Salat al-‘isha). It’s preferred that Muslims pray in mosques, but it’s okay to pray elsewhere. The Call to Prayer (the Adhan) is (HADI):

الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر  أشهد أن لا اله إلا الله أشهد أن لا اله إلا الله أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله حي على الصلاة حي على الصلاة حي على الفلاح حي على الفلاح الله أكبر الله أكبر لا إله إلا الله

Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar. Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allah. Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allah. Ash-hadu anna Muhammad-ar-Rasoolullah. Ash-hadu anna Muhammad-ar-Rasoolullah. Hayya ‘alas-Salah. Hayya ‘alas-Salah. Hayya ‘alal-falah. Hayya ‘alal-falah. Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar. La ilaha ill-Allah.

God is most great. God is most great. God is most great. God is most great. I testify that there is no god except God. I testify that there is no god except God. I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God. I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God. Come to prayer! Come to prayer! Come to success (in this life and the Hereafter)! Come to success! God is most great. God is most great. There is no god except God.

The preparations include: cleanliness, dress, ritual ablution, and intention. These are the basic steps to conduct a Salat:

  1. Standing
  2. Bowing (Ruku’)
  3. I’tidal and Stopping
  4. Prostration
  5. Sitting (Sajdah)
  6. Second Prostration

Prayer is very important. There are different prayers for each part of the day.

Muslim children as young as seven are encouraged to do this too (BBC). Keep in mind that there are some differences with the Salat between Sunni and Shi’a Islam.
